There are 24 runes in the Elder Futhark, the first runic alphabet, which was used from the 2nd to 8th centuries. I think some of the resistance I feel to transcription is that it seems a bit too easy, reduces the runes to a simple cipher, and skips a lot of interesting potential for creative anachronism.
